Electricity and power plug

Power sockets in Switzerland are of the so-called J-type (click for overview) and unique to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. However, this socket type is compatible with C-type plugs, which are often used for devices sold in the rest of Europe, South America, and Asia. For any other plug you will need to bring an adapter.

Currency

Switzerland uses the Swiss Franc (CHF) as its currency. 1 CHF = 0.97 EUR, 1 CHF = 1.04 USD (on 02.06.2022).

Credit/Debit card and cash money

Debit cards are widely accepted in supermarkets, shops, stores, and hotels in the city of Bern. However, be aware that the Swiss like their cash money and that shops outside of Bern city (and occasionally within Bern city) only accept cash. If you would like to go for a hike in the country side, it might be good to take out some cash. Credit cards are not widely accepted and usages is mostly limited to hotels.

Tipping

Tipping is not necessary in Switzerland, but appreciated in cafes, bars, and restaurants. 5 - 10% of the order value is sufficient.

Business hours

In Bern, most shops are open from 09:00 to 18:00 on Monday to Friday. Super markets are generally open until 20:00 and restaurants until 23:00. On Saturday most shops, including super markets close at 17:00. Be aware that on Sundays the vast majority of shops, super markets, but also restaurants are closed. Only a few restaurants in Bern city centre are open on Sunday.

Bern is known for its Aare river and swimming opportunities it offers. You might want to pack some swimming clothes!
