University of Bern

The University of Bern was founded in 1834. At that time up to 45 lectures educated 167 students. After the federal state was established in 1848, the number of students exceeded 500 in 1885 and doubled by the-turn-of-the century. The University of Bern was at that time the biggest in Switzerland.

Today around 18’000 students are enrolled at the University and around 466 full-time professors take care of their education. Around 4’000 full-time positions exists that allow a smooth operation of the University of Bern. Today the University of Bern is the third biggest University in Switzerland.
